Video Crit

The link to my first flash animation is posted below. While I found flash to be frustrating at times I still had fun making this and would like to try to animate using video next. What I've found most enjoyable is the power you have as an animator to be both the artist, the director, the casting agent, sound engineer, the whole movie company. You get to make all the decisions yourself which can make it harder at times when you'd like someones input on something, and easier at times when you dont have compromise your creativity for someone else. I tightened up the audio a few places before I uploaded it I think it has improved it.

Also below are some of the drawings I worked with and scanned on to animate.

The video is about friendship and youth, I thought a lot about playing in the bathtub as a child and just being really interested in the way things float in water.

  1. The title kills me.

Is the "young lad" character supposed to be a Joe? It has the look of a Joe.

I'm very disappointed that George did not make an appearance in this video. I was looking forward to George the Sea-quel.

I've never used flash before, so I have no idea how you managed to make this, but I think it's pretty impressive.

I noticed that you moved the horn sound that was at the very end. I think I liked it better before, it made a nice ending.

Did you consider giving Joe pupils? He looks kind of odd which just the white (kind of like he's wearing Robyn's contact lenses).

Using a darker shade for the turtle's left legs was definitely a good call. I find it adds some dimension.

The party hat part is my favorite. It's so simple, but so funny.

I think it could have gone without the confetti though, to me it looks very ms paint-like, and it doesn't fit with the aesthetic of the rest of the video.

And most importantly, how did you get the little dino dude as your logo thingy? I wanna change my logo!

  2. Well it was very ambitious to take on animation, and then to take on flash which is a program you weren't super familiar with. I think a lot of this project has to do with the process and learning flash.

That being said for you're first attempt it's miles above half the videos on Newgrounds or something.

Animation is a pretty is super labour intensive. How did you not go crazy?

Also, I think the music really ties it all together. It was something you made yourself, right? It's well suited to the atmosphere. Making music isn't really a quick process either.

  3. I agree with Amanda, it was super ambitious to take on flash for this project with no prior knowledge or instruction. You managed to teach yourself how to use what sounds like the most frustrating program in existence, with no assistance, only a few barely decent web tutorials. I think that was extremely brave of you, and I think you did a really great job. I honestly don't think I'd be able to persevere through that.

The aesthetic you often create in your work is really personified in this animation, and I believe the song you wrote for it had a huge hand in that. It's playful and imaginative, and it has a great sort of narrative. The characters you come up with are always super interesting, I really enjoy seeing the personalities that you give them.

  4. I think that for your first flash animation you did a great job, Especially considering the time restraints. I think this animation is a great example of the work you tend to do so I think it's great that you can take on various different medias but yet still make it your own.

I agree with everyone with regards to sound. I think it's great your using something that you created yourself to add to this animation.
